Retribution Paladin Updates 1/2/2011

Time for another Retribution Paladins update.  Want to bring up several topics that have been discussed around the web, and there are a few changes I made to specific information on this site.  As a reminder, I really try as hard as possible not to include too much theorycrafting here, as I like this site to remain more of a solid state Retribution guide.

New Mastery Changes

Right now, the is very little information on how and what Mastery will be changed into.  We know what Blizzard wants to do with it, but until we see actual numbers, there will be no way of placing a value on Mastery versus hit, expertise, crit, and haste.  Until we see those hard numbers from Blizzard, we just have to sit on our hands and wait.  In the meantime, save that extra mastery gear…just in case.

Weapon Enchant Rankings

We now have a pretty secure weapon enchants ranking for Cataclysm and Ret Paladins.  Most of this was already guessed, but now there seems to be some pretty solid numbers behind the rankings.  Exemplar over at Elitist Jerks has included this in his Retribution Thread.

  1. Landslide
  2. Avalanche
  3. Hurricane

Right now, Landslide materials are extraordinarily expensive, so Avalanche is the most common, and best way to go for most of us.

Talent Tree Change

This has been common knowledge for awhile, but I just made the change myself on this site since the numbers continue to show a small DPS increase:  The extra 1 point in the Retribution Tree should be in Eye for an Eye.  The current build now looks like:

Some Ret Paladins are wondering why not take Divine Storm out of the equation instead? Divine Storm still has its utility at 5+ mobs, and I have actually used it on a couple occasions thus far.  The hands cooldown reduction isn’t actually needed, and was more of a luxury than anything else for PvE.

Best Gear Lists

Thanks to more input from you guys, the lists are getting some needed fine-tuning.  I believe one goof I made was including some Heroic BoE pieces, which apparently never made it out of Beta.  Oops!

Rawr and Khor Don’t Mix

I have been trying for a good week and a half now to really see if Rawr can help me start an early BiS list, but I have had no luck.  The browser application over at EJ keeps trying to fit me with Agility gear, and even when I make tons of manual changes, the numbers seem WAY off.  I’m going to do some troubleshooting soon, and see if others are having these issues, then make adjustments as needed.

your 7/2/32 Skilltree is actually an 7/2/31^^
You forgott the last point in eye for an eye^^

btw…Happy new Year + greetings from Germany

  2. Khor says:

Hah! Good catch! Yes, the optional point that is available I still place in Acts of Sacrifice for the snare removal! Happy New Year to you as well, and thanks for the catch!

  3. trensar says:

what they will change in mastery ?

  4. fukki says:

hey khor ! greetings from Brazil!

you should write a PVP guide someday this year for us! would be awesome!

  5. Khor says:

Heh, PvP is definitely on my to-do list. So far, that has just been Tol Barad, as my focus has been PvE and getting geared. Playtime is limited with a wee baby, but PvP isn’t far off. I have my basic DPS set comlpeted, so I just need to hit that BG queue!

  6. Khor says:

@ Trensar – No idea on when Mastery change will be implemented. Could be next patch…and no idea when that comes out.

  7. Shogan says:

At least you don’t have to wait +30min as DPS in a BG queue lol

I tried out Ret in pvp for a while but found that due to the same RNG issues and more painfully the ease at which we are kited by ranged that Prot is far better. Granted as Prot you lose out on a gap closer and the added mechanic to cleanse but my overall damage and survivabilty is worth it. With the two shield glyphs and using Seal of Justice it is possible to close in on your target, once in stun range.

Well timed WoGs and other mitigation abilities mean that the likelihood of death is far less than the person you are attacking, no matter their class. There are some classes that can be tricky but if you can stay alive you will wear them down, or at least slow them down until the cavalry arrives :p

  8. Khor says:

@ Shogan – Yeah, I hear ya. In Wrath, I despised Ret PvP to the point of going pure Holy for Arenas and BGs. It was great. Great for me personally, but not great for the site ;) This time around, I am going to suck it up, and no matter how bad we are in BGs, I’m going to try and stick it through! Wish me luck :)

  9. Argandorn says:

Great site Khor. The best for ret paladins by far. Happy new year and your hard work is very, very appreciated although my paladin didn’t even hit 85 due to some time issues. It’s great to know when I do hit 85, I’m gonna be prepared with solid guides! Thanks again, it’s a he’ll of a job I’m sure.

  10. Limepally says:

Hey Khor! First just wanted to thank you so much for this website. Ive only been using it since the drop of Cata and it has been extremely helpful! I saw you were wanting to work on a pvp guide and in cata i jsut started doing pvp and if you need any help with that let me know.

  11. Gwar says:

Anyone know a good place for heroic dungeon guides?

  12. Laevum says:

I’ve been going mad with Rawr also. According to the website and the table of what is done, half done, and basically crap, the retribution build is 0% complete. Whoever was supposed to do it hasn’t checked in since June of last year. Most definitely not a happy camper atm with Rawr. Good job with the site though :)

I was buying up materials for landslide. thought i was doing well with cheapness of parts until i hi maelstorm crystal. 1300 gold each on our server…..ouch
