Ret Paladin Hit Cap

Retribution Paladin Hit Cap is current for Cataclysm, Patch 4.0, Patch 4.0.6 and Patch 4.1.  The hit cap for a Retribution Paladin at level 85 is 8%, or 960 Hit Rating.   Hit Rating reduces your chance to miss with white, special, and judgement damage.  Exorcism and Consecrate are spells, and thus they fall into the spell hit table.  Normal melee swings, Cruasder Strike, Templar’s Verdict, Judgement, and Hammer of Wrath are all attacks that are affected by Hit Rating.

To maximize DPS, each Ret Pally should have their hit capped.  Reforging now provides a solid option for reaching the hit cap.  Enchanting and gemming for hit cap is not optimal DPS, unless there are no options for either Strength or Attack Power.

The reason I am posting this individually (because I have it under my talents page), is to clarify this often searched stat.

Retribution Paladin Hit Cap

  • 8% Hit Cap
  • 960 Hit Rating to achieve 8% @ level 85
  • 840 Hit Rating to achieve 8% for Draenei (racial bonus) @ level 85
  • Eliminates chance to miss with melee damage.
  • Maximizes DPS

heh i laugh at my two enhance shaman friends cause they are always complaining about having to get capped hit and expertise for two weapons and then i tell em my hit rating (which until i got a couple upgrades) wasat 16.8% and they just look at me in disgust

  2. antibody says:

Quest, did you not read what he said? “(which until i got a couple upgrades)”, which means his gear all had a crap ton of hit on it. I was at a point in my early phases of gearing where mostly all but a few pieces of gear had +hit on it, putting me close to 15%. It takes time to even out your gear.

  3. incrusiable says:

yah now im right at the bar on hit like .58% over cap so im beter now and this week i get my 4 piece bonus woohoo

  4. kilswitch says:

my 80 ret pallys hit rating is at 400, which is well above the suggested 263, is that why i miss every once in awhile, i dont get it, i miss heroic dummy like 1 in 5 swings
    please help

  5. Khor says:

@ kilswitch – I believe the “boss” dummies can still parry and dodge. If you were attacking from the front, then this likely accounts for your “misses”. Getting expertise capped will remove dodge and parry from the table.

  6. Osmo says:

    Hehe I’ve got 542 hit rating…

I love your site. I have a question, however. How important is it to obtain your expertise cap, and is gaining it w/o the glyph a necessity? I looked but I have not seen a lot about expertise on your site. Help would be lovely, thank you!

ya i am curious about the exp. cap as well. also i use an addon for my FCFS thats telling me to do diff from urs. if i follow urs do u think my dps will go even higher? i mean im always #1 or 2 on the meters but hell nvr hurts to get btr =P

  9. Khor says:

The best bet is to follow the FCFS that applies to your gear level. under 2 T9 has one rotation, and 2 T9 has another, with 2 T10 and up having yet another FCFS priority system. Once you get really good at recognizing your priorities, you may not need the add-on at all.

  10. ChiChis says:

Ok, I’m lost … I leveled my pally recently to 80 and about to get my 5th piece of T10 and like none of my gear has hit rating, right now I have a 3% chance to miss a level 80. When I get my belt it adds 60 to my hit rating.

what stats do i need to focus on as a 85 ret pally .

“@ kilswitch – I believe the “boss” dummies can still parry and dodge. If you were attacking from the front, then this likely accounts for your “misses”. Getting expertise capped will remove dodge and parry from the table.”

@Khor – That comment may have been a long time ago, but I just wanted to correct it. Expertise cap for melee dps does not remove parry, it removes dodge. If you soft capped it, dodge will be gone, but if you attack from the front, you have a 7.5% chance of parry, which is why attacking behind the boss is essential for melee dps. I don’t know what a dual-wielding class has to deal with though.

@powercrazy- probably too late for you, but it may help others….
Ret Pallies should first focus on being hit capped (960), then Expertise Capped (26). After this the importance of stats are usually held to be:
    Strength>Crit>Mastery>Haste
Mastery and Crit are occassionally debated as being of equal importance. Mastery can be better if your quick on your rotation. Otherwise take Crit, its automatically beneficial.

i just wanna know how much bonus dps u get with hit cap as ret paly, and btw Adoniram>mastery then crit
