Future Value of Mastery

With the new Hand of Light changes, Mastery is about to jump up in terms of stat priority.  While the new design is still sitting on the PTR, we can expect Mastery rating will jump up for Retribution Paladins in terms of priority.

As it stands right now, Mastery now adds 2.5%  of damage done by Templar’s Verdict, Crusader Strike, and Divine Storm as Holy damage per 1 point of Mastery.  So, by default, we start with 8 Mastery, giving us a flat 20% boost to the aforementioned damage sources.

So if everything hold true, my guess is that our stat priority list will look like this:

  1. Strength
  2. Hit
  3. Expertise
  4. Mastery
  5. Critical Strike
  6. Haste

Now, that changes a ton of gear priorities.  If you read my site, you will know that in several articles and pages I have recommended holding onto your Mastery gear, even if you aren’t wearing a particular piece anymore.  Now, those pieces may shift in importance.  Gear with +hit/+mastery will now out-value gear with +hit/+crit.  Now, until we see these changes go live, I cannot say this with certainty, but it is definitely a probability.

Reforging also gets a little trickier now that you won’t want to be reforging Mastery into other stats.  Excess hit and expertise will be reforged into Mastery for sure, but whether or not to reforge crit or haste into Mastery is something that needs to be determined.

For example, if I am already hit and expertise capped, and I get a piece of gear that has +crit/+haste, then my assumption (based on new stat priorities) is that the haste would get reforged into Mastery.

Finally, to leave you with one more little bit of information, my guess is that [Impatience of Youth] and it’s Horde counterpart are about to become very sexy options for Retribution Paladins!  So save those Tol Barad tokens!  While they may not replace the +strength trinkets, they definitely can help fill a trinket void for those in such a need.

The values you mention seem to be logic even with mind calculating. I myself have been sitting on 250 TB tokens waiting for actual numbers and not just assumptions. The only thing i want to point out is the crit being of more importance than haste. I believe crit will grow as the tiers pass with the better and better gear comming while haste gives us more white hits and CS’s which are high on the damaging skills list at the moment. Share your thoughts :)

  2. Khor says:

Actually, it’s going to be interesting to see how haste scales versus crit. It’s entirely possible that with higher gear levels and tier gear, haste may increase in value as it did in Wrath. Only time will tell, I guess. But yes, crit still hold a very tiny, tiny edge over haste at the moment.

  3. tyron says:

in this case, i suppose the BiS gear list will change drastically, will there be an update?

  4. Berio says:

To get as much TV’s out isn’t it better to have your CS @ an 3 Sec cooldown, since CD is our only income of HoPo now.

Ofc we have our “Old” HoL-proc changed in to a talent but it still RNG. So to get some more reliability i’d guess, haven’t done the math, i haste will be better then crit and even a little better then mastery…

  5. Khor says:

@ Tyron – Yes, it will change the lists. Based on the info I have now, I have already re-done them…but until the Patch goes live, I will wait to post t hem up here. But the general idea will be: hit/mastery > hit/crit > hit/haste. Other stats follow suit.

@ Berio – It’s possible haste will jump up in value, but at what point? TV should jump ahead of HoW and Ex in our FCFS, but at what Mastery rating? The default 8 mastery? I’m not sure yet, haven’t done all the math. It could be that (as an example) haste becomes more valuable than crit at 13 mastery. I haven’t figured it all out yet, but we kind of need to wait and see how things transpire on the PTR.

I’ll definitely keep this updated, though.

  6. Captoats says:

The trinket will be nice, but on use effects never outweigh chance on procs imo. I won’t be replacing my dmc: hurricane or h right eye. I have a few mastery pieces lined up to gem/enchant when the time comes. One thing I’ve noticed is that most end game rets (top guild rets) are doing very drastic things. Some of them don’t even seem to know what they are doing, enchanting for haste one place, then reforging it off somewhere else. Blizzard needs to stop changing rets so drastically and give us something concrete to work on.

  7. Rolanor says:

From what I’ve seen Captoats it is better to use Heart of Solace and reforge for hit elsewhere, as Right Eye of Rajh is a strength uptime of around 300 for its 1710 proc and 10second duration, while Heart is a strength uptime of 600 or so, having the same amount of str proc, but on a 20 second duration. The ICD are the same, I’ve had them up at the same time often when I used both.

  8. Rolanor says:

One thing I’m looking forward to find out is with the increase to mastery effects, will it be worth gemming an orange gem on a yellow socket for a +10str bonus with a 20str 20mastery, or will it still be better to go solid strength.

  9. Lykaon says:

So I jumped on the PTRs to check this out. I did a test on live first with my current gear, which is reforged for hit->expertise->crit/haste.

I did two tests of two minutes each on the raider’s training dummy. I did not use Guardian, but I did use both Zealotry and Avenging Wrath in succession.

On live, my average was about 9500 DPS.

On PTR, I reforged all of my existing gear to hit->expertise->mastery as this post suggests.

I did two test of two minutes each. Same rules as above.

ON PTR, my average was about 9500 DPS.

I should do some more tests, obviously, but the initial result is not so impressive. The only difference I really noticed is that Holy Power comes more slowly, such that you’re pretty much alternating between TV and Inquisition. This made the rotation feel slower and less frantic.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If the rotation is more dependable, the class will be easier to play. I was hoping for a buff, though. :(

  10. Lykaon says:

    UPDATE on above:

This time I reforged my gear treating crit, haste, and mastery as equivalent. Basically, I did not reforge any gear unless I needed to for hit and expertise cap. I left all other gear as-is.

    My armory: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/uldaman/myranda/advanced

I did the same test. Two tests of two minutes each, using zealotry and avenging wrath in succession.

    Average DPS: 11000 DPS

This is a significantly large boost. I realize that two tests may not be a definitive study, but this test would tentaively indicate that mastery is tracking about even with crit and haste.

I believe my tests are about equal in terms of my rotation. I was using Crusader Strike->Filler->Crusader Strike. If AoW procced, I would hit that (sometimes clipping CS). Same with HoW when I had wings up. I kept inquisition up at all times, sometimes using the Hand of Light proc to give me a boost. If Inquisition was fine, it was 3pt TVs.

  11. Rolann says:

    Khor,

I like this change, but I was wondering if this would change our META Gem? I know u have Chaotic Shadowspirit listed as the best, but I dont want to sacrifice my reds for the 3% crit dam. So as of now I have Destructive Shadowspirit Diamond, it only requires 2 reds. But with the change in the lin up will Fleet Shadowspirit Diamond be considered? I know it requires 2 yellow, but that is better than more blue than red, Im just saying. Feed back please

  12. Lykaon says:

I’m pretty sure the newly announced Reverberating Shadowspirit Diamond will be our new one.

  13. Varrex says:

There will be a new meta with the patch as well as changing the req for the current meta = more blues then reds will change to 2 reds.

On my personal test I found a 1.5-2.5k dps increase leaving most of my stats the same and found a loss when reforging everything to mastery (all though the holy damaged did hit much harder) as the cs time was cut drastically, the lack of haste was horrid and HP suffered as well with the much slower rotation.

My advice would be to keep the stats equal as suggested above or stack haste for a much smoother rotation… The stats seem to be fairly equal in value…

  14. Soubi says:

I have one question here. Khor, when are you going to update BiS gear since mastery got higher priority?
    Thanks.

  15. Bugs says:

Apperently this has now been nerfed:

Hand of Light (Mastery): A percentage of the damage done by Templar’s Verdict, Crusader Strike, and Divine Storm is done as additional Holy damage. This Mastery now grants a 2.1% increase to Holy damage per mastery, down from 2.5%.

  16. Lykaon says:

The nerf to our Mastery to provide less damage per point is significant in my opinion only because Mastery is already so close to Crit and Haste in terms of value (based on the testing above by myself and Varrex).

Honestly, I’d love a world where the only reason to reforge would be to get your hit and exp caps. Equally weighted stats seems like ideal design to me.

  17. Khor says:

@ Soubi – As some have mentioned above, Mastery has already gotten a nerf. This devalues it slightly, aligning it more closely to crit and haste. The lists will be changed once 4.0.6 goes live. Before then, anything could change and the lists would be very inaccurate. So, until we see the changes live, we stick with the current lists, because on the servers right now, that actually reflects current stat priorities.

  18. Kimina says:

A major thing to consider with Heart of Solace & Right Eye of Rajh.

Heart of Solace is chance on hit where Right Eye of Rajh is chance on crit. During my last kill on Magmaw World of Logs recorded the following information…

    Heartened (Heart of Solace) 5 (Procs) 100.2 (Uptime) 19.3 % #
    Eye of Doom(Right Eye of Rajh) 8 (Procs) 80.4 (Uptime) 15.5 % #

This is a pretty solid representation of trinket proc’s. Magmaw is a stand still and dps fight for melee or at least my role in this raid was. This was on the successful encounter and I managed just over 16K DPS in an 8 1/2 minute encounter.

Looking back at similar length attempts resulting in wipes Heart of Solace consistently proc’d less, but produce more then Right Eye of Rajh.

  19. Boogieknight says:

Assuming Mastery does what it’s supposed to do, when would be a good time to use Mark of Khardros? I’m assuming that we would link it with Zealotry to get the most damage from the successive Templar’s Verdicts. Would this be correct?

  20. kraig says:

Does haste effect how well mastery works. i have a ret pally with hit capped haste 12 crit 11.15 mastery 16.38 and expertise is 27
