Retribution Paladin Trinkets
Best for Patch 3.3

RP-kneeling

The Top 10 Trinkets for a Ret Pally have finally left Darkmoon Card: Greatness behind.  With new trinkets in ToGC, we finally were able to start switching out our DM card.  Now, we have trinekts that can just leave it in the dust.  About time.

My previous Ret Paladin trinket post was a bit misleading, particularly because it was based off my own personal Rawr scores. I had a very poor trinket (Mirror of Truth) still equipped, so the priorities were a bit skewed.

With a little help from Rawr, BiS gear lists, and Elitist Jerks, I now give you the top 10 trinkets for a Ret Pally.

  1. [Tiny Abomination in a Jar Heroic]
  2. [Tiny Abomination in a Jar]
  3. [Death's ChoiceHeroic]
  4. [Whispering Fanged Skull Heroic]
  5. [Death's Choice]
  6. [Deathbringer's Will Heroic]
  7. [Whispering Fanged Skull]
  8. [Herkuml's War Token]
  9. [Deathbringer's Will]
  10. [Darkmoon Card: Greatness]

Tiny Abomination in a Jar?

Tiny Abomination in a Jar is a deceptively great trinket, because it ramps up and scales very well with Ret Paladin melee DPS and rotations.  It is possible to generate 5 motes on one single melee swing due to seal proccing, so that instant 50% damage will come fast and often.

    Trinkets such as Death’s Choice.

i just dont get how deathbringers will regular can be sooo low on the list D: well im currently using it and whispering fanged skull so if you take out heroic mode stuff that gives you 3 and 5th best trinkets :D

  • Khor (Site Admin) said:

Simply because the armor pen is such a low stat for us.

  • Doctadrae said:

well so is haste khor, and the proc on deathbringer’s will is awesome, 600 str/700 crit/700 haste, is it really worse than the herkuml’s war token?

The list is from Elitist Jerks, based on their testing of the trinkets. I tend to agree with the logic, because the passive stats that are always active on the other trinkets tend to outweigh DBW. That’s not to say DBW is a bad trinket…if it’s an upgrade, likely it is a huge one for some Ret Pallies. Testing just has the other trinkets working out better for DPS in the long run. If I didn’t buy Herkuml’s, I definitely would have been rolling on DBW to replace my Mirror of Truth :)

Hey Khor, first of all great website! its been really helpful to me. I just had one question. How come [Herkuml's War Token] is so great? the attack power buff only stacks up by white dps and rets prefer slow slow 2h weapons. I would say it would take around 20-30 seconds to get a full stack of 20. Is it good simply because of the 153 haste that it comes with? please help :)

indeed pretty helpful website, after i get my 4 set i’ll probably be saving the 60 emblems for herkuml’s, i’ve been trying for Death’s verdict for ages, EVEYRONE needs it and it barely ever drops, i’m still stuck with mark of supremacy with hit rating on it that i dont even need, but at least I have whispering fanged skull =)

Ok I need some assistance. I just got the [Tiny Abomination in a Jar] trinket. What is the deal with this trinket?????? I used to have the [Mark of Supremacy]. I used to macro my wings and [Mark of Supremacy] together on every CD. This alone would boost my DPS every 2 min. Its really cool to be 6th on DPS charts in the middle of the fight and then pop wings and trinket and be # 1 and stay that way ;) . Now that I have this new trinket [Tiny Abomination in a Jar] I’m kinda gonna miss my [Mark of Supremacy]. ;( But I hear that [Tiny Abomination in a Jar] is the best trinket for RET pally’s.

Also I have the Bryntroll, the Bone Arbiter, does this proc work well with this trinket or would it be better to get another weapon? I now about the nerf and it really sucks. Is there a better 264 weapon in ICC or should I just get Shawdow’s Edge?

(dont look on my hit im preparing to switch to bryntroll as sonn i get it)

Deaths Choice HC, > Tiny Abom.
Having both Tiny Abom and its HC version would bring you too far overcap

  • peter said:

Is it even possible ? You cant have both hc WFS trinkets atleast.. Since it says ” You can only equip 1 item in the Whispering fanged skull category “

  • Nick said:

Tiny Abom is BiS by far
    Tiny abom beats Heroic DC
The reason it is best in slot is because you gain motes of seal procs and melee attacks and manifest anger cause a seal proc giving you more motes and so on.
The ap and the proc of Heroic DC is not going to beat 50% (around 2000 dmg) every about 10-15 sec.

  • Nick said:

Also it doesn’t matter if you go over hit cap, this trinket is BiS by for.

  • Mythh said:

Hi i have the nobles deck but i am unsure if should sell it or use it. i am currently using mark of supremacy and needle encrusted scorpion.

  • Khor (Site Admin) said:

Hey Mythh, Darkmoon Card: Greatness is far better than either of the two trinkets you mentioned. If you plan on raiding, the DMCG trinket takes you well into ICC. If you are at hit cap without the MoS, then that’s losing some of its value already. Of course, if you are trying to save money for Cata, then selling the deck now would be optimal, because the lack of new raids and desire for many to stop gearing will cause prices to plummet.

  • Mackeyser said:

Question. Nice site, btw. I thought they nerfed TAiaJ. They certainly nerfed it HARD for rogues, which is what I played when ICC first came out. I’ve since returned to my main, ret in 25 just starting heroics and prot in 10s. We’ve been putting together our BiS lists.

Does TAiaJ still proc as strongly as it did before the nerf? Was it only rogues that saw the value of this trinket plummet?

  • moya said:

well i just got mine yesterday and im not seeing an overly large boost over dbw and wfs i also have war token

  • raj said:

    ok
    to tell u the truth

WFS normal vs hekumi (depends on fight)

hekumi pulls ahead on static fights (haste+ passive ap) vs crit(chance to proc damage)

i tested it out 2day on why on some fights me as a ret paladin lost out dps to my friend who is another ret paladin

we both have4 pc t10 + the same weapon (his trinkets are TAJ :same as mine) but his other trinket is greatness vs my WFS (on festergut i swaped out my WFS n bought a hekumi and i toped his damage done by a lot more on heroic festergut

so depends on fights if you have issues on damage done.. the trinkets might be a key determinate factor for a increase in DPS

I really don’t think Herkuml’s War Token is better than Darkmoon Greatness. In fact, Darkmoon must be way higher DPS than Herkuml’s War Token.

    Here’s the math:

    Herkuml’s War Token’s stat: 153 haste rating is 153*8.56 DPS/10 haste rating=125.76 DPS
    Darkmoon Greatness: 90 STR * 1.15 STR talent = 104 STR is 104 * ( 13.22 DPS /10 STR ) = 137.488 DPS
So that makes the stat dps comparison similar.

For Darkmoon Greatness, tHe debuff stays up all the time assuming you are always hitting.
    300 STR(*1.15 with talent)= 345 STR = 690 AP

Herkuml’s War Token has 17 AP*20 debuffs=340 AP after ramp up time, which is way less than 600 AP from Darkmoon’s Greatness’s 690 AP.
