Paladin Heirloom Project Part VIII (71-80)

Continuing with my Paladin Heirloom Project, I am going to post levels 70 through 80 here. This is the final stretch, and I will finally get to see how fast it takes to get to 80 with heirloom gear. Let’s just say I was shocked at the results.

If Blizzard decides to add any more experience gains to heirloom gear in the future, leveling will become even less of a pain than this was. Keep in mind, on my journey to 80, I rarely stopped to enjoy anything other than questing and leveling. My goal was to get to 80 as quickly as possible, without any distractions.

Hence, I only leveled enchanting and first aid. That was it. No PvP at all except for two AV matches to complete quests I used to level with. Next time around, you can bet I will slow things up just a bit to do all the things I passed up on.

If you need to look back on the other heirloom posts, here is a list of everything thus far:

Paladin Heirloom Project Part VIII

Levels: 71-80

Zones Involved: Howling Fjord (70-72), Borean Tundra (72-75), Grizzly Hills (75-76), Zul’Drak (76-78), Sholazar Basin (78-80)

Training at Levels: 73, 78, 80

Overall Time Elapsed: 3 days, 8 hours, 28 min

Gear Purchased: Done by a bank toon every couple levels, random BoE greens of the Tiger, of the Beast, of the Soldier, and of the Bear. Quest reward gear actually supplied most of my gear. Only had to fill in the gaps with the BoE gear for this level range.

  • Quest stack as much as you can. It’s harder in Northrend because everything is so frustratingly linear, and there is a lot of running back and forth because of the limited quest stacking here.
  • Bought the cold weather flying BoA tome on my main Paladin to send to this toon so she could fly at 70. Pure awesome. Travel time reduced by more than 50%

Howling Fjord

  • I did every single quest here, including all the group quests. Every one.

Borean Tundra

  • I did every quest here as well, nothing overly exciting.
  • Had to grab an Overcharged Capacitor from the guild bank for the quest at the gnome airstrip. Other than that, everything was pretty much straight forward.
  • I did all of 4 quests in Dragonblight to get to 75, then skipped the zone completely and moved on to Grizzly Hills.

Grizzly Hills

  • Nothing exciting here. Was only able to do about half of the group quests, as I wasn’t quite strong enough. My first time I ran into this problem.

  • Great area to level in, and great quest stacking the further into the zone you get. One of the rare areas in Northrend that promotes solid quest stacking.

Sholazar Basin

  • Another solid quest stacking area, plus you’re not flying over the whole zone sporadically to complete quests.

That’s it! Leveled from 1-80 in my heirloom gear with my +20% experience gain bonus. A minuscule 3 days, 8 hours, and 28 minutes! That beats my main Paladin’s record to 70 by almost 4 DAYS!

I will do another summary post after this, but for now, I leave you with this…buy your heirloom gear for any toon you want to level. It will drastically reduce your leveling time. Just take it one step further, go ret paladin, and see how dominant you can be in the leveling aspect of this game!

  1. Alastor says:

Thank you very much for this guide. I will be using this guide AND the heirloom items when I can get back into the game. I will be levelling a warlock along with my discontinued dk (currently 71) for getting some sulfuron ingots from Molten Core for my ret paladin main. May the Light bless these heirloms. Oh and another note for anyone out there. If you like to solo old content like myslef, you can actually enchant your heirloom shoulders with the 30attack power bonus enchant from the ZG zandalar tribe. Needs exalted though, but worth it, because it’s even more powerfull than the first ap bonus enchant from the Aldor or Scryers. Thank you again.

  2. Belfness says:

Just wondering how you went to 72 in Howling Fjord, I ran out of quests 31% into 71. Quests are pretty spread out there unfortunately. I resorted to Dragonblight, which seems like a good move given the amount of quests to do there.

  3. Khor says:

Hey Belfness, sorry for the late reply. To be honest, I actually went 70-72 in Howling Fjord, and a little beyond. I did every quest, reaching the acheivement in the process. Do you have both heirloom items equipped (chest + shoulders) that will yield +20% experience gain? Maybe I killed more mobs on the way, not sure, but I’ve done 70-72 on just about every toon I’ve leveled to 80, so I know it’s definitely do-able!

  4. hey uh u think zygors guides would be ok? got it for free its like 80$ and i see people get 80 so fast and idk if the guide wastes time

  5. Khor says:

Actually, I have no idea if it works or not. I definitely do not advocate handing over actual money for guides, so I probably wouldn’t recommend something that was bought for cash. You got it for free, and that’s great, but I simply don’t know if it’s any good or not ๐Ÿ™

  6. wow uve got great response this site looks cool and i wanna lvl my ret pally on a new server cuz i miss my old guild and now they server xfered to so..

  7. Arisper(scourgesbane) says:

khor, i have followed every detail of your guide and i love it, got my palladin to 0-80 with the same gear in a little longer than you (because i love beating up some horde in bg’s). Thank you very much, however, ive really wanted to level a warlock or some other caster, but i find it very hard to follow this guide on a caster. Do you think you could make a caster guide:)? This current guide works amazingly for melee classes, but im having alot of trouble with a caster, just wondering if you would mind.

  8. Khor says:

Thanks Arisper! I’ve thought about doing other class guides, but the reception here on this site for said guides has been pretty lackluster. I did a Warrior one awhile back, through level 20 or so…but the interest just wasn’t there, so I discontinued the guide ๐Ÿ™

It’s definitely worth looking at again, though! I have an 80 Mage, so maybe a Warlock would work…

  9. Abyss says:

I think you have a typo on how many days it took you to go from 1-80. I think you used the time it took going from lvl 70-80.

Thatโ€™s it! Leveled from 1-80 in my heirloom gear with my +20% experience gain bonus. A minuscule 3 days, 8 hours, and 28 minutes! That beats my main Paladinโ€™s record to 70 by almost 4 DAYS!

Just a heads up, thanks for the guide.

  10. Abyss says:

Delete my last post, I see what you did… bad..

  11. Khor says:

It seems like a typo, doesn’t it! Click on the screenshot in the post, you’ll see the overall time elapsed…3 days, 8 hours, 28 minutes, that was from 1-80! Crazy, huh? That’s how solid Ret Paladins are at leveling. Remember though, I didn’t level any professions at all except First Aid, and I went in no instances or battlegrounds (except AV once or twice i think for the quests).

  12. Dredarius says:

I wanted to profusely thank you for doing all of this hard work. I rolled a heirloom-laden pally last night, and am LOVING it (main is a hunter).

Thank you for this great guide to basically EVERYTHING ๐Ÿ™‚

    -Dredarius, Shattered Hand

  13. Khor says:

Glad you like it! Can you imagine what’s in store for us come Cataclysm?!?! I get to do this all over again!

  14. Nytengale says:

Khor – I think your site is awesome. I had a Pally just sitting at 21 for months and I found your site and it made me want to lvl my pally. She is now at 61 and only took me 3 weeks (not play time lol) to get her there using your guide and site. I have been trying to find gear on the AH but hard to come by on our server right now. Here is my toon. Yeah i know she needs alot of work on gear lol. I am looking at this build by what wowpopular showed me the one you showed seems to be the second popular one. Any comment on the first 5/5/61? I do value your opinion because of your site. Thanks for taking the time to help us RetPally noobs ๐Ÿ™‚ Keep up the great work!

    Nytengale (aka Nyteshayd)

  15. Joe says:

will the heirloom project continue on to 85?

  16. Hawkwind says:

Khor, good stuff here. Just wanted to give you the courtesy inform that I have linked you up from my little guild blog, talking about my own experiment following your uber-guide here. Thanks for all the work! Like I told my guildies, I wanna be you when I grow up ๐Ÿ™‚ Take care, see you on the other side of 4.0!

    – Hawk
