Headless Horseman Crash

Headless Horseman Crash

Hallow’s Eve is here and with it comes the Headless Horseman.  If you are crashing when entering the Headless Horseman encounter, during the encounter, or trying to zone out of Scarlet Monastery…you are not alone.  I was experiencing the crash as well; in fact it happened 4 times in a row for me.

I thought it was the game but as I payed closer attention, I think the culprit might have been an add-on.  I disabled DBM thinking that might do the trick and it did.  However, the very next run with DBM disabled, I froze again.  Sigh.

If I find out what the exact cause of all the Headless Horseman crashes is, I’ll post it up asap!

UPDATE: Definitely the cogwheel and/or the pumpkin.  Something buggy happens when you cursor over the pumpkin.  Sorry to the 24 or so players I have left hanging via DC 🙂

Didn’t try to do the Headless Horseman yet, so I can’t comment on that, but I had my fair share of crashes and freezes within the past few days. I’m playing on a Mac so these might be Mac specific, but I’ll post them anyway.

    1. The new Graphics Engine GLL is acting up:
As it seems, some of the new effects are causing major problems. This might be fixed when reverting back to the old OpenGL Graphics engine. This can be done by typing this into the chat ingame:

    /console set gxApi OpenGL

Then restart WOW and see if it helps.

    2. “Cogwheel Problem”
It seems there also is a problem with nearly anything that changes the cursor to a cogwheel. Didn’t find any fix for that yet, might have to wait for Blizzard to fix it.

    3. Corrupted cache
Just delete the contents of the Cache folders. There are 2. One is “Data\Cache”, the other one is “WTF\Cache” (not sure about that one, as I don’t have a WOW installation on this computer). Make sure you delete both folders. They are recreated by WOW when needed.

Hope this helps. Will post here again if I dig up something new.

I ran this 6 times this morning 5-boxing with DBM running.

First 5 runs it worked fine, no lag, no freezing, DBM worked perfectly etc.

6th run I dropped one of my group and added another person (with unknown addons) and it froze every time one of my characters approached the pumpkin. I didn’t get any addon errors messages, but the WoW client froze and had to be terminated. After about 6 rounds of this, I just logged out and have not been back.

This is the first freeze / crash I’ve experienced since July.

  3. Fritzpuddel says:

I think it is the pumpkin. If you press it from the front you crash, or even sometimes when you are hovering the mouse over it. So you have to press it from the back. It has worked so far for me 🙂

  4. Thaldai says:

I didnt crash, but all who was in my party did, odd..

  5. Triggap says:

Was so pissed off that it froze me..

But somehow I got the achievement and the mount as soon as I logged back in so it worked out LOL

  6. Damian says:

hi..ame here but i disabled GearScore and problem is gone..worked for me 🙂

  7. Ana says:

I run various mods and have had no problems with it.

  8. Q says:

I very rarely have this kinda problems as I had today. And sure hell not this often. My game froze when I was approaching the pumpkin, when I was in a battleground and when I was loading another dungeon. And I wasn’t alone with my DC problems.

  9. Nytengale says:

Just disable all addons and try. I have not tried yet but will tonight and let you know. I would activate them one by one and see which one you crash on when it is running. That is if you have the patients for that.

  10. Hasselblade says:

Just read on another site WoW Insider.

50/50 chance if you click on pumpkin.

Suggest DPS to click on and not the Tank,

Haven’t had headless crash (yet). But everytime I use my argent tournament tabard to hearth there and start to fly to Dal I freeze. I restart, delete WTF, cache, and interface files log on and works (all settings and macros are wiped). Never had any problems before 4.0.

  13. DEMONJEANK says:

    look at this:

Since I use this, my crashes are gone.

    Hope it helps.

  15. Sighs says:

Turn off tool tips and you should never have this problem again 🙂

  16. Nytengale says:

I concure and agree with Sighs. The problem is related to tooltips. So, the fix is to turn tooltips off. The fix below has worked FLAWLESSLY for me on every 80 I have.

  17. Nytengale says:

Here are some Macros you can create to turn tooltips on an off easy.

To turn the tooltips off, your macro should read:

    /script GameTooltip.Temphide = function() GameTooltip:Hide() end;GameTooltip:SetScript(“OnShow”,GameTooltip.Temphide);

To turn the tooltips back on, your macro should read:

    /script GameTooltip:SetScript(“OnShow”, GameTooltip.Show);

Then mouse over an item if a tool tip comes up you need to adjust the macro.

    Have fun
